INTRODUCTION

English Language Centre (ELC) trains the students to get a considerable amount of exposure to all the four language skills – Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Students are trained to face the IELTS exam and score 5.0 out of 9.0 bands to be eligible for the admission into Undergraduate program and score 6.0 out of 9.0 bands for Postgraduate program. English Language Centre aims to enable the students to comprehend the concepts with clear perception; to carry forward the classroom learning by developing basic English language skills required by any individual and further to build up the courage in facing the IELTS exam boldly and get through it successfully. Under this department the Mathematic Crash Courses is also conducted with the guidance of the Academic Faculty Members from General Education section of the Undergraduate Program.

  • To make the students understand English effectively and communicate ideas orally at various personal as well as academic levels.
  • To help students in building active and passive vocabulary.
  • To offer them the support and training to understand the concepts in all the four skills.
  • To provide Basic & Advanced level of IELP courses with specific emphasis on preparing students to score the required bands in IELTS (Academic) for entry into the Undergraduate as well as Postgraduate program.
  • To equip students with basic mathematic skills through mathematics crash course.
  • To offer individual attention, in times of need and counsel them as and when required.

Academic module of IELTS

The Academic module of IELTS consists of four components:

Listening:

The students are expected to listen to an audio recording produced by the native speakers of English .They listen to academic dialogues and monologues; non-academic dialogues and monologues. They are expected to answer the questions as they listen. Ten minutes are given at the end for the candidates to transfer the answers.

Reading :

The students have to read 3 passages on topics of general interest; one of these texts contains a detailed logical argument. They are expected to answer a variety of questions. 40 questions should be answered in one hour. No extra time will be given to transfer the answers

Writing:

This module consists of 2 tasks. In task1, the students are expected to look at a diagram or a graph and present the information in their own words (150 words). In task 2, the students are assessed in their ability to present a solution to the problem, present and justify an opinion, compare and contrast evidence and evaluate and challenge ideas etc. They are expected to write in an appropriate style. (250 words).One hour is given for both the tasks.

Speaking:

In this module, the student is expected to introduce himself/herself in an oral interview. Later he/she has to talk on a particular topic for 2 minutes. The examiner gives the topic (and one minute is given for preparation).After that he/she has to participate in a discussion for 4-5 minutes. .This module assesses the fluency, lexical resource, grammatical range, accuracy, and pronunciation of the students.

Course Delivery :

The IELTS preparation program at Skyline University College has been designed in two different levels:
A 120-hour program is termed as Advanced Program: Students, whose score is between 425 and 499 in TOFEL (ITP) or between 3.5 and 4.5 in IELTS (Academic), will undergo an ‘Advanced Program’

A 170-hour program is termed as Standard Program: Students, whose score is between 350 and 424 in TOFEL (ITP) or between 2.0 and 3.5 in IELTS (Academic), will undergo a ‘Standard Program.’

IELTS EXAM:

Skyline University College liaison with HCT (Zayed University) for the conduct of IELTS exam .The venue will be decided depending up on the number of candidates taking the exam. However, it can be either Skyline University College or HCT (Zayed University) campus in Academic City .

How to apply for the IELTS exam

IELTS Application form has to be filled by all the students on the stipulated date given by the administration department of Skyline. They have to fill it under the guidance of an expert from the administration.
Students should be ready with the required documents at the time of filling the application, which includes copies of passport /labor card, photographs etc.

On the test day

Students should carry their passport /labor card to the examination centre, without which they are not entitled to write the exam. The total test time is 2hours and 45 minutes.
Anyone who arrives late will not be admitted to the test.
