Intensive English Language Program (IELP)
|
|
The IELP (IELTS - Academic) preparatory course and
Mathematics preparatory Course are designed for students whose
academic standards are inadequate to be accepted for admission into the
undergraduate course of Skyline University College. These courses
prepare the students who have scored inadequate scores in the
standardized English proficiency test and mathematical ability placement
test of Skyline University College. The placement of the student in these
courses IELP (IELTS - Academic) preparatory program is determined on
the basis of grades obtained in placement exams.
(Note: Prospective Students having English as their first language in their
home country are not required to appear for TOEFL)
Scenarios 1, 2 and 3 help to understand the philosophy for placing a
student in the IELTS preparatory program:

SCENARIO 1
|
|
The Student scores inadequately in both standardized English
proficiency test and the mathematical ability placement test: In this
scenario, the student undergoes the IELP (IELTS - Academic) preparatory
program to improve the skills in English and Mathematics preparatory
course to improve Mathematics skills. The students in this scenario will not
be allowed to join Freshman level of undergraduate program (for details on
levels of placement, please refer to categories mentioned in preparation for
English language skills section and scenario 3 for Mathematics requirements).

SCENARIO 2
|
|
The Student scores inadequately in the standardized English
proficiency test to meet the admission requirements but scores
adequately in mathematical ability placement test given by the
University College : In this scenario, student will undergo IELP (IELTS
- Academic) preparatory course of study to improve English language
skills towards meeting the admission requirements and she/he will be
exempted from taking mathematics preparatory course in the program
since she/he has the required skills in Mathematics (for details on levels
of placement, please refer to categories mentioned in preparation
for English language skills section).

Preparation for English Language Skills – IELP (IELTS
- Academic) Preparatory Course
|
|
For students who have passed the Mathematical ability test
administered by the University College but have failed the English
language proficiency test, the under mentioned categories will apply
based on the scores obtained in the placement test of TOEFL or
equivalent. These categories will determine their placement in the
preparatory course. Students who fall under this scenario will be
provisionally admitted and are allowed to take a 3 credit Freshman
level course (in category B), which do not require English skills as
specified below. However, prospective students who score below 350
in TOEFL are rejected by the University College.

Category A :
Students who have scored between 350 and 424 in
TOEFL (ITP) or 2.0 to below 3.5 in IELTS (Academic), will undergo a
preparatory course in IELTS (Academic) for a period of one semester
(total of 170 contact hours) and at the end of the course students will
appear for IELTS (Academic) Exam. Their maximum number of
contact hours will be dedicated towards preparation for IELTS
(Academic) during the IELP (IELTS - Academic) preparatory semester.
Under this category the student will take the following course:

Writing, Reading, Speaking and Listening skills 1
|
|
|
Category B :
Students who have scored between 425 and 499 in
TOEFL (ITP) or 3.5 to below 5.0 in IELTS (Academic) will undergo a
preparatory course in IELTS (Academic) for a period of one semester
(total of 120 contact hours) and at the end of the course students
will appear for IELTS (Academic) Exam. Such students will be allowed
to enroll up to 3 credit hours (one course) of Freshman level while
the maximum number of hours are dedicated towards preparation for
IELTS (Academic) during the first semester. Under this category the
student will take the following course:

Writing, Reading, Speaking and Listening skills 2

Students falling under this category will be allowed to take any one
of the following Undergraduate Freshman level courses up to the
stipulated maximum number of credit hours mentioned in
categories (depending on their latest score in IELTS (Academic) and
availability of that particular course in the ongoing semester):

Category C :
Incase, any student from Category A & B is unable
to score a minimum of 5.0 in IELTS (Academic) during the IELTS
preparatory semester of study, she/he is allowed to re-register for
another IELTS preparatory semester. In this category, students can
enroll into a Freshman level course up to 3 credits (one course)
depending on their latest score in IELTS (Academic) and availability
of that particular course in the ongoing semester. For placement
of such student, please refer to the policy mentioned in category
A or B.

Important Note :
Incase any student fails to acquire the required level of
English proficiency even after the completion of their provisional
admittance under the above mentioned scenarios and wishes to exit the
University College, will be awarded a transcript for the undergraduate level
courses completed during their association with the University College.

Note:
Students who score between 475 and 499 in the entrance exam of
TOEFL will be eligible to retake a TOEFL test without attending any
preparatory course if he/she is confident of scoring 500 or above
in the subsequent TOEFL test. However, applicable TOEFL exam fee
will be charged.
|
|
In case the student has managed to score 500 or above s/he will
be admitted into the undergraduate program. In case the student
is unable to score 500 in the latest attempt as well, s/he will be
required to undergo a preparatory course in English and the latest
IELTS (Academic) scores will be considered as the base to place the
student in the IELTS (Academic) preparatory courses.

SCENARIO 3
|
|
If the student scores inadequately in the Mathematical
ability placement test given by Skyline University College and if s/he
has scores adequately in the standardized English proficiency test
to meet the admission requirement, s/he has to take the
Mathematics preparatory course (MAT001 – Numeracy) to improve
the mathematical abilities up to the requirements. Hence, student
will be admitted into the undergraduate degree program
on a simultaneous progression with the Mathematics preparatory
course. The student will not be allowed to take courses requiring
mathematics in the Freshman level. Such students progress to
Sophomore Level until they pass the Mathematics preparatory
course with 60% marks. The courses that a student may take on
